Review of Deadpool

Review of Deadpool

First and foremost, SPOILERS ARE ABOUND BELOW… if you do not want to hear any spoilers before seeing the movie, TURN AWAY NOW.

Now with that out of the way, WOW! Deadpool was freaking AWESOME!  It completely lived up to the hype of an action-packed movie filled with f-bombs, sardonic banter and a face that “looked like an avocado has sex with an older avocado.”  It was a genuine good time and I laughed-out-loud multiple times.  As with all action movies, I recommend seeing it in IMAX so you can seemingly feel the blood spatter on you as Deadpool cuts down his enemies… and sometimes himself.

Going into it, I did not know what to expect of Deadpool breaking the fourth-wall (and sometimes the sixteenth-wall) as I have not read the comics, but the writers did a great job interweaving it throughout the movie by using it to poke fun at itself; they called out the previous movie version of Wade Wilson and said about the use of showing the X-mansion but only showing Colossus and the little known Negasonic Teenage Warhead “such a big house and I only see you two, it’s like the studio didn’t want to fork over money for some more X-Men.”

AGAIN, STOP NOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ ANY SPOILERS AS I AM ABOUT TO GIVE A SYNOPSIS OF THE MOVIE

Like most movies are doing now-a-days, the movie started towards the end of the cinematic timeline and used flashbacks to show how our hero (even though he dislikes the term) found his way into the current situation.  Deadpool started off as Wade Wilson, a bad-guy doing good deeds to earn a living i.e. scaring stalkers into not tormenting teenage girls.  While at his go-to bar, also where Wade gets his assignments, Wade meets the girl of his dreams (a hooker at the time) and they fall in love.  Shortly after proposing to her, Wade collapses and it is revealed that he has a late-stage terminal cancer.  Facing death, Wade is approached by a creepy figure who offers him a chance to change his fate.  After some deliberation, Wade takes the man up on his offer and is taken to a facility that changes normal people into mutants (I will save you the explanation how).

Through his transformation, not only does Wade’s appearance change from a handsome lad to one who looks like “Freddie Kruger face-fucked a topographical map of Utah,” he also develops the ability to regeneratively heal aka his body can heal itself at an extremely rapid rate, to the point he can grow back lost limbs.  Wade manages to escape by destroying the facility where he is held captive and vows vengeance to find those who mutated him.  Too ashamed of his appearance to try and recapture the affection of his fiancé, the newly named Deadpool (unfortunately not Captain Deadpool) goes on a killing spree and slowly tracks down leader of the facility, Francis.

This brings the movie back to the opening sequence, one where Deadpool murders multiple people but due to an intervention from Colossus and Negasonic, Francis narrowly escapes Deadpool’s wrath.  Francis then kidnaps Wade’s fiancé, which causes Deadpool to enlist in the help of the two X-Men and guilt trips them into helping him get her back, as they were the reason he did not kill Francis in the first place. I will again spare on the details of a vital scene, but the biggest issue I had with the movie was how Deadpool managed to finally save his fiancé as it too unrealistic, even for a Marvel movie.  The movie has a warm and humorous ending, one fit for its Valentine’s weekend release and I am eagerly anticipating the sequel… assuming there will be a sequel.

One request for the sequel, bring back Dopinder, Deadpool’s friendly taxi driver who accepts crisp high-fives instead of money for fares and almost stole the movie as the scenes with Dopinder are some of the funniest in the movie.  Also, TJ Miller did a great job in his Marvel debut as the bartender of the bar Wade/Deadpool frequents.  TJ lived up to his reputation as foul-mouthed and quick-witted, providing laughs just about every time he opened his mouth.

Overall I give this movie 10 beers out of a 12-pack and would definitely see it again.
